Too much? If anything, you're not enough!

Too much? If anything you're not enough!

Did you use to watch Friends, Reader?

If so, you might remember when Ross moved in with Joey and Chandler and, after a short while, began asking them to 'quiet down a bit' in various scenarios.

Ahh, those sanctimonious little hand gestures. We all laughed because, well, Ross... but...

Has it happened to you?

Did someone, at some time, tell you to 'bring it down a bit'. Maybe not in terms of volume. Maybe in terms of attitude, viewpoint, enthusiasm, commitment... you were being a bit too much for them.

For 'them'...

Remember that last bit.

I'm assuming you're 'good people'. You are kind, respectful and you try to do your best for others. If someone feels unsettled, put out, maybe even threatened by your kind deeds and high energy actions... how much of that is a 'them' problem'?

I was chatting with someone recently who was worried that "the person they are does not fit into what is 'expected' from the person who typically does what they do".

Expected by who?

Sounds like 'them' are at it again

'Them' worry me... The world is feeling a bit prickly right now – seemingly just two sides to every conversation (and less willingness to listen to either side).

'Them' might be holding you back from being 'you'. And not just today.

There may have been a Ross moment in the past – a hand gesture (perhaps without the sanctimony) that asked you to be less 'you'. It may not have been meant with malice; it was just the other person feeling caught up in their own feelings. They meant no harm.

But it stuck with you. And you've become well-practised in not being 'as much' as you can be.

It's not about 'them'

Again, with the caveat that you are 'good people' aiming to do good in a world that is encouraging 'less', be 'more'. Be as much 'you' as you can be. Unapologetically... bravely... wholeheartedly...

Where could the world (your world) do with a little more you? Go do that.

A young lady shrugs in confusion. Over the top of the image is the sentence (in a bold font) "That's not my why"

"That's not my why..." Happy Monday to you Reader, If you have kids or very young relatives, you may be familiar with the "That's not my..." touchy-feely book series (I used to sell them by the thousands!). The premise is simple: Take a cute character (baby animals work well) Every page reveals a characteristic of said creature that confirms it can't possibly be yours – e.g. That's not my guinea pig... it's tummy is too scratchy There is a touchy-feely patch, on the guinea pig's tummy, that...

A white piece of paper on a green background. A question mark is cut out of the paper, casting a gentle shadow

Be more curious today Have you ever been asked a question you can't answer, Reader? About 30 years ago, a mate of mine asked me "Who invented carpet?" There were two reasons he asked me this: He thought that I was pretty good at general knowledge He was a bit stoned I did not know the answer. I have subsequently Googled it. Carpets are Middle Eastern in origin and have been around for well over 4000 years. This is not the answer he was hoping for. He wanted names. I'll never have a name for...

Bold bright text on an orange background that reads, "What will it take for you to 'quit the but'?"

How much is enough? Have you heard of Seth Godin, Reader? Recently, Seth (author, marketing guru and all-round genius in my book) was on Steven Bartlett's DOAC podcast. I confess it's not a show I usually listen to. It's too long and... well, Bartlett fatigue! But when Seth speaks, I listen The episode delivered Seth's view on how we keep ourselves stuck: How the word 'but' creates a tension in our lives and in our businesses (I have thoughts on this, as you'll know if you've read my book)....
