The 'mistruths' we tell ourselves about our business (and why they matter)

So here's a question Reader,

Do you find yourself clinging to small, longstanding, unhelpful beliefs about your business – ones that feel safer to hide behind than to challenge?

Things like:

  • Mondays are always a bit rubbish
  • No point starting anything on a Friday afternoon
  • Everyone switches off once the school holidays begin (so best wait 'til September)
  • A recession is a terrible time to start a business
  • A recession is a fantastic time to start a business (see what I did there?)

Like most clichés, these stick because they’re modal – assumed truths, repeated often enough to sound like common sense.

But let’s call them what they really are: procrastination.
Or, if you’ll allow it… excuses.

They’re comfortable. Familiar. Convenient. And they become self-fulfilling. The more you tell yourself don’t, the more you… well, don’t.

So, what would happen if you started telling yourself do?

Let’s challenge those mistruths

  • Monday: What if you turned up with purpose and a smile? That’s 20% of your working week reclaimed — not bad for a simple mindset shift
  • Friday afternoons: What if that flash of brilliance didn’t have to wait until Monday? Act on it now. Ideas don’t wear watches
  • School holidays: Not everyone clocks off for the summer. And some people need your brand of magic today
  • Recession fears: The only truly bad time to start something is never. Growth doesn’t wait for perfect conditions

Yes, the economy matters. So does the cost of living. These are real, tangible events. But what shapes your outcomes isn’t the event itself – it’s your response to it.

"What defines your success is what you choose to do to become successful."

(That’s going on a T-shirt)

I’m taking action... join me?

If you fancy being super quick of the mark, I am hosting a free webinar today (Monday 30th June) at 1.30pm (UK), entitled "Mindset Barriers to Business Growth".

(Sadly this one is for Oxfordshire-based business owners and companies only)

Then on Tuesday 8th July, I'm running a free, half-hour lunch and learn workshop on LinkedIn, exploring the relationship we each have with failure (check out last week's blog) and how the smallest shift in that relationship can reap huge rewards.

I hope to see you there.

Stop hiding behind old beliefs and start building something better – one small, brave step at a time.

Well, that was unexpected Reader! Up until a week ago, I would say that May has been the most successful and enjoyable month of my self-employed business journey: Two fabulous events (speaking and exhibiting) Dozens of magical new humans exploring the world of the Four Fears® Unbelievable book sales ...and more... Bloody plot twists Often, when I have guested on various podcasts, I have talked about my dad being my hero. When we're little, we get asked what we want to be when we grow up. I...

'Victory Wheel', illustrating a circular seven-step pathway to move your business from where you are, to where you deserve to be

Spin, spin, spin the wheel Reader! I love a good step-by-step process. "Do this, then that... and it will all work out". Wouldn't it be great if life was that linear? No curve balls or plot twists... a simple guarantee to move forwards with every action. Of course there are curve balls, but there is beauty in each of them. They are the surprises that might catch you out, but that open doors to new and sometimes overlooked chapters in your unwritten story. Mindset is one of those playgrounds...

A stack of scrabble tiles that spell 'upgrade'. Next to that is text that reads "What does the next iteration of you look like? Upgrade yourself and your dreams".

What operating system are you currently running Reader? I'm not talking about your phone or laptop, I'm reflecting on your own internal software upgrade. At the Professional Speaking Association Spring Conference earlier this month I heard the brilliant Andrew Bryant suggest that he was running V5.1 of his own software; 5.1 being a riff on his own age (51). The premise is that every year you get to upgrade your viewpoint on life, business, and you. When did you last upgrade? It's a novel...
