Permission granted

Permission granted...

... but not by me Reader,

You don't need my permission (who on earth would I think I am to say otherwise?). You also don't need anyone else's permission...

Permission to do what?

Ah, now there's a question. How about permission to be selfish?

For most of us, the word selfish sits rather uncomfortably. Our news feeds are full of international selfishness right now and that's not a label we want to co-opt for ourselves.

But there is another kind of selfish to consider. The one that provides the deeply honest answers to the first of my two favourite questions:

  1. What is it you really want (I mean REALLY want)?
  2. Why is that so important to you that you're prepared to take brave action in order to make it happen?

("Not those again, Mark... you're repeating yourself!")
Yes I am... and I'm not going to stop when it comes to those two.

The honest reply to question one IS selfish. It's meant to be.

It's the single most important thing in your life because building a bigger business, being a better partner, parent, sibling etc... whatever your answer to the question is, making it happen begins with you 'selfishly' choosing to become the best you can be.

That is how you can truly serve others

That is how your 'rising tide' can 'lift all the ships' around you. And taking brave action... that's permission. That's you believing you deserve the answer to question one.

You won't truly give yourself permission until you deeply believe that you deserve that first answer.

Permission is not mine to give.

The conversation around what's stopping you from 'permitting yourself'?
That I can do.

P.S. My own selfish note

This week I gave myself permission to believe I might win one (or both) of the two National Coaching Awards I am a finalist in.

I'll know if I am either the Emerging Coach, or the Rising Star of the Year (again, or both) by the time I send the next newsletter.

Also, I'll be celebrating one year of "How to Embrace the Four Fears® of Business Ownership". Have you read it yet?

Practice does NOT make permanent We've been misled Reader, I'm working on something that I can't tell you about yet (I know... how conceited of me to think you care!). It is something that fits the following criteria: It's been an ambition of mine since forever When offered the chance, I jumped in two feet first I am 100% capable of delivering on it (above and beyond, in fact) Since saying yes, I've become more and more terrified Any of that feel familiar? A big opportunity comes your way and...

A photo of prickly cacti with a panel of text over the image that reads "Be more inconvenient".

Be more inconvenient Hi there Reader, You may have seen Hannah Spencer, a newly-appointed MP, delivering her first speech to the Houses of Parliament here in the UK. It was an honest, authentic and impressive debut. Her hands were shaking because being in that room clearly meant a lot to her. There was no political point-scoring in her words, no 'contrary for the sake of contrary'. It was refreshing in many ways: The British media decided it was newsworthy Except they chose to ignore Hannah's...

Jar full of assorted paintbrushes. Overlaid is text hatreds "Do you care too much?"

Do you care too much? I do like it when people agree with me, Reader, ;-) When I talk about how I help creative professionals "improve the emotional relationship they have with their work (as they have a habit of getting in their own way)", there is always a furious nodding of heads (yay!) When you're passionately connected to what you do, there can be a wonderful zen – an energy flow where ideas and inspiration tumble out of you like rainbow drops from a fairytale waterfall* You're at one...
